Introduced in 2007, the Guelph & District Multicultural Award provides everyone with an opportunity to acknowledge contributions made by our local citizens to the civic, cultural and social welfare of our Guelph & District community. Nominees considered for the Award shall be judged for their overall achievements, service, humanitarian contributions and initiatives that promote peaceful relationships and cultural understanding.

Youth Category Award Recipient: Farial Hashimi 

Originally from Afghanistan, Hashimi has lived in Canada for 10 years. She is a Centennial high school grad and is currently studying at the University of Guelph.Her work with new Canadians has included volunteering as a front line receptionistat Immigrant Services G-W, facilitating a computer tutorial program and helping new Canadians and individuals from the lower income community, with the filing of their T1 tax returns.

Adult Category Award Recipient: Amenda Ng

Currently a settlement counsellor, Ng has worked tirelessly for the multicultural festival, organized seminars & workshops for Chinese newcomers, formed a Chinese seniors program, assisted University of Guelph Chinese students; and is recipient of an Ontario Newcomer’s Award. In nominating Ng, Mei Wu noted: “A Chinese greatman said: For a  person to do one good thing is not hard, but the difficulty is doing good things all the time.’ Amenda is the person doing good things all the time. Her passion and energy have made Guelph a better place to live.”

Group Category Award Recipient: Guelph Onward Willow Youth Council

20 “incredibly diverse” high school students: Aml Mohamed Saleh, Anamia Lakew, Bigmurad Yusof, Clinton Chan, Danny Nguyen, Eric Tran, Hemed Zahor, Jackie Egges, Jerry Ratsavong, Jimmy John Angrignon, Jimmy Mai, Mobin Binawa, Julie Ratsavong, Mckenzie Lawrey, Meghan Dolby Mohamed Saleh, Noah Lakew, Phil Hoang, Ramy Ly, Seandel Brown, Shinthu Puwaneshwaran, Steven Montgomery, Tyler Nuttley & Zahor Zhor. These youth are skilled role models to the younger children and youth in the Onward Willow neighbourhood, and work together through play, fundraising, workshops, problem solving, to create a community of peaceful youth relationships and cultural acceptance.
